"I'm Not From California" is the first of many songs I created when I traded the rainy mountains of Vancouver for the LA sun last November. The song starts off "in a dimly lit and crowded bar" and takes you on a journey that's reminiscent of some of my favourite coming-of-age movies. I was inspired by Corinne Bailey Rae's "Like A Star" so we added live strings which gives me goosebumps every time!! Sooooo if you're wondering what an unrequited love song made by someone who's not from California sounds like? I guess you just gotta take a listen :)
Unrequited love...
This song started off as a voice note when I was in Toronto for NXNE. You see, there was something so exciting about being in the city of Toronto on my own. I wanted to write about my experience so I came up with "Taste of Freedom". I took it to the incredible Desirée Dawson and we finished the song together. I knew I wanted the song to draw from early 20000s feel good tunes like "Put Your Records On" and "Unwritten" so we went all in! Some of my favourite horn players played on the song annnnd I even managed to get my family to record some backing vocals. Try to hear if you can spot themmmm :)
