Set against the backdrop of a “dimly lit and crowded bar” in LA, “I’m Not From California” breathes new life into the classic unrequited love song. Through earnest lyrics rooted in storytelling, listeners are taken on a journey reminiscent of a nostalgic coming-of-age movie. Underscored by lush violin and cello arrangements; folk-inspired guitar picking patterns; and traditional Nigerian rhythms, “I’m Not From California” serves as a metaphor for all the reasons why her feelings towards the alluring boy from the bar are unreciprocated.
Bukola's second release from her forthcoming project is a summer anthem for 20-somethings who are finding themselves, celebrating the moments that give them a “Taste of Freedom”. Inspired by “Put Your Records On”, the early 2000s sonics of the song are personalized with vocals from her family, live horns, and a jazz-inspired guitar progression.
